Rock started as a fast-paced dance music in the 1950s but performers quickly learned they needed to breathe a little air into their sets with slower songs. Some hard-rocking artists' ballads became their biggest hits, in fact. The late 1960s and early 1970s seemed to be the peak time for the rock ballad.
